Systematics and Taxonomy of Diatoms

The primary theoretical focus of our laboratory group.  We are dedicated to understanding the evolutionary relationships of the diatoms using morphological and molecular homologies.  These discoveries are summarized in taxonomic efforts geared toward maximizing communication and understanding.  Cumulatively the systematic and taxonomic efforts establish the basis for identifying target organisms and bioproducts for applied applications.

Bioderived Nanomaterials

One way our systematic discoveries are put to use.  We and our global collaborators are actively characterizing useful microalgae and microalgal metabolites for applied application.  This work most often focuses on the identification and characterization of nanostructures useful for medical and technical applications that are beyond ability of current manufacturing methods.

Bioprospecting Algal Metabolites

Another way our systematic discoveries are put to use.  We and our global collaborators are actively characterizing useful microalgae and microalgal metabolites for applied application.  This work most often focuses on the identification and characterization of algal biochemicals useful for dietary, nutraceutical, and medical application.

Morphology and Biomechanics of Diatom Grazers

The heterokont algae are the primary source of essential fatty acids on the planet.  The diatoms are the major group of heterokonts and the ulimate source of omega-3 fatty acids for animals.  Research in this area focuses on how, where, and in what form animals are eating diatoms as a source for these critical dietary oils.
